WPM
Words per minute — your raw speed. Every 5 characters (including spaces) count as 1 word. Only correctly typed words are counted.
Accuracy
The share of keystrokes you got right. Aim for 95%+. Low accuracy silently caps your real speed no matter how fast your fingers move.
Consistency
How steady your pace stays from word to word throughout the test. High consistency = reliable, repeatable output under real conditions.

About touch typing
What is touch typing?
Touch typing means typing without looking at the keyboard, using a fixed assignment of fingers to keys. Each finger owns a specific set of keys, starting and returning to a home-row position — A S D F and J K L ; — after every keystroke.
This is fundamentally different from hunt-and-peck typing, where you search for each key visually and type with two to four fingers. Hunt-and-peck typically caps out around 30–40 WPM and becomes tiring for long writing sessions — because your eyes and brain are doing the work your fingers should be doing.
Touch typing offloads the search entirely. Once muscle memory is built, your hands navigate the keyboard the way your feet navigate a familiar room in the dark — without needing to look.
What a WPM score means
If you type 40 WPM, it means you type about 40 standard words (200 characters) every minute. Likewise, 60 WPM equals roughly 300 characters, while 80 WPM equals about 400 characters per minute.

Words per minute (WPM) explained
WPM is the most visible metric — but it is also the most misunderstood. Here is exactly what it measures and what it does not.
What counts as a word?
Every 5 characters — letters, spaces, punctuation — equals 1 word. So "hello" is 1 word, and "I am." is also 1 word.
Raw WPM vs Net WPM
Raw WPM counts everything you typed. Net WPM subtracts errors. Net WPM is what most tests (including this one) report.
Why speed alone is misleading
A typist doing 90 WPM at 80% accuracy is slower in practice than one doing 70 WPM at 98% — because corrections eat time.
When does speed actually improve?
Speed climbs naturally once accuracy is locked in above 95%. Pushing for WPM before that just trains in mistakes.

What is typing consistency?
Typing consistency is how steadily you type throughout a test — not just how fast you start, but how well you maintain your rhythm from beginning to end. A consistent typist holds a smooth pace, avoids sudden speed drops, and keeps accuracy stable under pressure.
In plain terms: consistency shows whether your performance is stable or all over the place. A high peak speed means nothing if your pace swings up and down across the test.
How consistency is measured
Consistency is judged by how little your speed and accuracy vary during the test:
consistency = stable pace + low variation + steady accuracy
Starting at 72 WPM, staying at 70–74 WPM and keeping errors low = strong consistency. Jumping from 80 WPM to 45 WPM and back = low consistency, even if your average looks decent.
