English typing test
An English typing test designed like professional performance software
Most typing tests stop after showing your speed. TypingFix was built differently. Every keystroke, every correction, every pause and every improvement is analysed by a dedicated engine designed to help you understand why you type the way you do — not just how fast. Whether you are learning to touch type, preparing for a competitive exam, improving office productivity or simply trying to type English faster, this English typing test gives you detailed performance insight that goes far beyond a traditional words-per-minute counter.
Scroll up to take the test — it starts the moment you begin typing. Then read on to see exactly what the engine behind it measures, and how to turn that feedback into a faster, steadier typing style.
How to take the English typing test
Nothing to set up — the timer starts on your first keystroke, so a moment of hesitation never counts against your score.
- Pick a length. A timed run (30 seconds to several minutes) or a fixed number of words — whichever matches how you want to measure yourself.
- Choose your content. Plain words, real paragraphs, numbers, or your own pasted text; add punctuation or numerals for a harder run.
- Type. The line scrolls smoothly and keeps the current word in view. Focus on hitting the right key — accuracy first, speed second.
- Read your report. Your speed and accuracy show immediately; open the advanced view for the timeline, heatmap and weakest keys.
- Repeat with a target. Change one thing — a mode, a length, the pace bot — and run it again. Because nothing reloads, you can iterate in seconds.
Understand your English typing results
A typing score is more than one number. Here is what each metric tells you — and which one to fix first.
WPM
Words per minute — your English typing speed. Every five characters (spaces included) count as one word, and only correctly typed words are scored, so WPM reflects usable speed, not raw finger motion.
CPM
Characters per minute — a finer-grained view of the same run. Because it counts individual characters, CPM reacts to small gains long before they show up as a whole extra word per minute.
Accuracy
The share of keystrokes you got right. Aim for 95%+. Low accuracy silently caps your real English typing speed no matter how quickly your fingers move — every correction costs time.
Consistency
How steady your pace stays from word to word, tracked in real time across the whole test. Two people can share a WPM score; the steadier typist performs better under real deadlines.
Error rate
The flip side of accuracy — the percentage of keystrokes that missed, plotted against time so you can see exactly where mistakes clustered rather than just how many there were.
Built around a modern typing engine
This English typing test is not just a webpage showing random words. Behind every run is a dedicated typing engine built for accurate measurement, real-time rendering and advanced analysis. It has been refined continuously to improve precision, reduce visual distraction, support modern input methods and stay smooth across very different writing systems.
Instead of rebuilding the page every time you change a setting, the engine updates itself in memory. Language, content type, test length, punctuation, numerals, custom text and layout can all change instantly — no reload, no lost focus, no interrupted session. That zero-reload design is a plugin architecture under the hood: each feature is an independent module that listens to the engine, so the experience stays fast and stable even as capabilities grow.
Private by design, free by default
The whole English typing test runs in your browser. There is no account to create, nothing to install, and no wall in front of your result — you start typing and the test begins. Your keystrokes are analysed on your own device to build the live stats and the advanced report, and your preferences, such as the mode and length you like, are remembered locally so the test opens the way you left it. Nothing about the experience is gated: every mode, every error setting, the pace bot and the full performance report are all available to everyone, every time, at no cost.
A performance report, not just a score
Traditional tests give you three numbers: speed, accuracy, time. This one records every keystroke and shows where your score came from.
Speed timeline
A line chart of your WPM from the first keystroke to the last, so you can see your warm-up, spot fatigue, and measure how steady your pace really was.
Keyboard heatmap
Every key on the QWERTY layout tinted by its accuracy — green where you are clean, red where you slip. It turns "I make mistakes somewhere" into "I miss the letter B".
Per-finger accuracy
Your keystrokes mapped to the ten touch-typing fingers, so a weak ring finger or a lazy pinky shows up as a number instead of a vague feeling.
Weakest keys & characters
A ranked list of the exact keys that cost you the most, so practice targets what is actually holding you back.
The report also tracks consistency in real time and totals your keystrokes and missed keystrokes, so instead of wondering why a score dropped, you can see the exact second — and the exact key — where it happened. For scripts where a QWERTY layout does not apply, the engine automatically switches from the keyboard heatmap to per-character analysis, so the feedback is always meaningful.
Live feedback while you type
You do not have to finish to learn something. As you type, a compact stats bar updates in real time — your current speed, your accuracy, the number of incorrect entries and your running streak of correct words — so you feel the effect of slowing down for accuracy or pushing for speed the instant it happens. A thin progress bar shows how much of the run is left, and the pace bot, when enabled, glides alongside you as a live target. Everything you see is optional: the typing box, the stats bar and word highlighting are all one-click toggles, so you can strip the screen down to just the words for pure focus, or keep every readout on. And if you need to step away, the test pauses and resumes without losing your place.
Practise the way you want
Everyone practises differently, so every part of a session is yours to choose — content, length and style.
Words
A continuous stream of common English words — the classic way to measure raw English typing speed with no punctuation to slow you down.
Paragraph
Real, connected prose with capitals and punctuation, so your score reflects how you actually type sentences, emails and documents.
Numbers
A dedicated numeric mode using the numeral script you choose — invaluable for data-entry, finance and back-office practice.
Custom text
Paste your own passage — an exam paragraph, a code comment, a speech — and the test runs on exactly that. Finite custom runs end naturally when the text is finished instead of looping forever.
On top of the content mode, you can run a timed test or a fixed word-count test, sprinkle in punctuation or numerals for a tougher run, and pick from several numeral systems. Every change applies instantly, so you can reshape a session mid-flow without ever leaving the page.
Error modes for different learning styles
Not everyone learns from mistakes the same way, so you control how the engine reacts when you slip.
Show mistakes
Wrong letters are marked in red and you keep typing — the default, and the closest to a real writing flow.
Stop at word length
You cannot run past the end of a word, which trains you to notice length and stop overrunning.
Block until correct (word)
You cannot advance to the next word until the current one is completely right — strict accuracy training.
Block until correct (key)
Every single keystroke must be correct; a wrong key is rejected and flashed, and the cursor holds until you hit the right letter.
A separate Blind mode adds two masking levels — hide your mistakes, or hide mistakes and the caret entirely — for pure muscle-memory practice. Beginners, students and experienced typists can each train in the way that suits them, without changing the core test.
Race a virtual typist
Practising alone can get repetitive, so the test includes an optional pace bot — a second caret that glides ahead at a target speed. Instead of racing a clock, you race another typist. Choose a fixed speed, a ramp that climbs from a start to an end speed along a linear or exponential curve, or an adaptive mode that keeps the bot just slightly ahead of you — enough to pull your speed up, never so far that the race feels impossible.
Character-level, composition-aware rendering
The word you are typing is rendered character by character: correct letters, wrong letters and extra letters each get their own styling, and the target text stays visually stable while a mistyped key flashes and fades so your eye is never yanked around. That precision is what makes the per-key and per-character analysis in your report possible.
It also makes the test genuinely fair across writing systems. Typing Chinese, Japanese or Korean is fundamentally different from typing English: characters are composed through an Input Method Editor (IME). Most tests compare the temporary phonetic letters you type while composing, which breaks highlighting, the cursor and the final score. This engine is IME-aware — while you compose, it keeps the target visible, holds the cursor steady, and only judges accuracy once a character is fully committed. And because it applies Unicode normalization before comparing, characters that can be encoded more than one way are still matched correctly, so results are consistent and fair.
One engine, many writing systems
This page is the engine tuned for English, but it was multilingual from the first line. Rather than a separate engine per language, a single configuration-driven architecture adapts automatically: it knows that some languages are space-based and others are not, that some read left-to-right and others right-to-left, and that speed is best measured in words per minute for some scripts and characters or keystrokes per minute for others. It supports native and Roman input, multiple numeral systems, and full right-to-left rendering for languages like Arabic — and routes each language to its own dedicated page so the right words, direction and metric load every time.
For you, on the English test, that depth shows up as reliability: accurate scoring, a stable caret, clean rendering, and a report you can trust.
English typing speed benchmarks
Where does your result sit? Use these bands as a guide, then let the report tell you what to practise next.
| Level | Speed | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner | Under 30 WPM | Still finding the keys. Focus on hitting the right letter first — English typing speed follows accuracy, not the other way around. |
| Average | 30–45 WPM | The everyday typist. Learning to type without looking is the single biggest unlock at this stage. |
| Proficient | 45–65 WPM | Comfortable and mostly blind. Weak keys and hesitation spots are now the bottleneck — the report pinpoints them. |
| Fast | 65–85 WPM | Your typing keeps pace with your thinking. Consistency over long passages separates fast from elite. |
| Elite | 85+ WPM | Sustained speed with high accuracy — the top few percent of English typists. |
Who this English typing test is for
Students preparing for competitive and government typing exams use the fixed word-count and custom-text modes to rehearse exact passages under real conditions. Office and data-entry professionals lean on the numbers mode and the accuracy report to lift productivity where it counts. Programmers switch to code practice for symbols and brackets. And anyone simply wanting to type English faster gets a clear, honest picture of their habits — and a specific list of what to improve — instead of a single score to guess at.
How to improve your English typing
- Fix accuracy before speed. Slow down until you are hitting 97%+, then let speed rise on its own. Chasing raw speed while accuracy is low just trains mistakes.
- Attack your weakest keys. Open the advanced report, read the keyboard heatmap and the weakest-keys list, and drill those specific letters — not the ones you are already good at.
- Train consistency, not peaks. A steady 55 WPM beats a spiky 70. Use longer paragraph runs and watch the speed timeline flatten out.
- Practise real text. Paste passages you actually type — emails, notes, exam paragraphs — with custom text, so punctuation and capitals become second nature.
- Race the pace bot. Set it a little above your current speed and let it pull you forward a few WPM at a time.

English typing test — FAQ
Quick, direct answers to the things people ask most.
Is the English typing test free?
Yes. The English typing test is completely free, with no sign-up, no download and no paywall. You start typing and the test begins immediately, and your speed, accuracy and full performance report are all available at no cost.
How is English typing speed measured?
Typing speed is measured in WPM (words per minute), where every 5 characters count as one word and only correctly typed words are scored. It is also shown as CPM (characters per minute) for finer detail. The timer starts on your first keystroke, so hesitation before you begin is never counted.
What is a good typing speed in English?
A good English typing speed is about 40 WPM for everyday use. Roughly 30–45 WPM is average, 45–65 WPM is proficient, and 65 WPM and above is fast. Many data-entry and office roles expect 60–80 WPM at 95% or higher accuracy.
How long does the typing test take?
You choose the length. Timed tests run from 30 seconds up to several minutes, or you can set a fixed number of words. A quick check takes under a minute; a 1–2 minute run gives a more reliable score.
Can I practise with my own text?
Yes. Open Custom text, paste any English passage — an exam paragraph, an article or your own writing — and the test runs on exactly that text. Custom runs are finite: they end when the passage is complete instead of repeating.
What does the advanced report show?
The advanced report shows a speed-over-time timeline, a keyboard heatmap of your accuracy on each key, per-finger accuracy, your weakest keys and characters, consistency, and totals for keystrokes and errors — so you can see exactly where your score came from.
Does it support languages other than English?
Yes. The same engine runs typing tests in Hindi, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Thai. It is IME-aware for Chinese, Japanese and Korean, supports right-to-left scripts like Arabic, and picks the correct speed metric for each language. This page is the engine tuned for English.
Do I need an account or any download?
No. There is nothing to install and no account to create. The English typing test runs entirely in your browser, and your results and preferences stay on your own device.
Ready to see how you really type?
